Here's a good example of what is possible with Creative Commons: A picture taken by one person, and edited by another.

Peter Charbonnier took this photo of a Chevy Corvette at a car show in Seattle's Lake City neighborhood. It captured the distinctive details of the mid-60s Sting Ray: Curved back, external gas cap, and a hint of tail light. The angle was perfect.

I've been experimenting lately with Pixlr-O-Matic on my cameraphone, and found recently that they also have an online photo editor with cool filters like their mobile app. So I ran Peter's original picture through the "Metal" and "Dirty" filters in Pixlr-O-Matic, which gave the shot some urban low-fit character. I like the results.

But they would not have been this good without Peter's great picture to start with. It just shows that collaboration through Creative Commons can also provide a unique vision!

Street Cred...Finally

After seeing shiny happy Prius cars running around the Pacific Northwest for so many years, It's nice to finally see one that has been pounded and repaired. Primer on a Prius? I never imagined it until now.

This one appears to have the color a ex-taxi cab, or at least one that will be back to trawling the streets after new paint is applied.

It finally has some street cred.

The Poor Kalakala

It's a ship that is always on the verge of doom.

The old Kalakala ferry is currently taking on water and listing to the side in a Tacoma waterway. This photo, taken over Lake Union in 2004 by SoggyDan, shows the Kalaka at rest in one if its other spots where it awaited repairs that never came.

About ten years ago I toured the Kalakala when it was in this spot with my car club. We visited every deck, including the engine room. The boat had a particular smell, an unusual mix of diesel and history.

Is the end near for the Silver Slug? It could very well be. So so sad.

The Colors of Sunset

I love slow shutter shots; ones like this not only highlight the beautiful colors of the sunset but also the action of a dynamic society on the move. Cars in motion, but caught in time.

Snoqualmie Falls - Nov 2008

Fall foliage this year has been in full force. Many people I know have mentioned how colorful the season has been. Because the reds, yellows, and oranges have been hanging around longer, photographers have been able to capture the season more.

Ahren D took this on November 2, 2008. HDR combines multiple shots - with each taken at a different exposure level - into one shot that uses the best from each shot. While this technique has been around for decades, digital photography brought it into the mainstream because many DSLRs have the ability to take multiple shots of the same scene with one click.

This remains one of my favorite fall photos, especially with the dark clouds above the water. In my opinion, this photo is a great one to learn from.

The Chinook Motel

Brewbooks snapped this photo in 2006 along State Route 900 in Renton; the road was also known as The Sunset Highway before the Interstates went in. A sign that was common in the 1960s is now a relic of the past. And this one in particular no longer exists. The lot has been cleared and all vestiges of the Chinook Motel are now only a memory.

Very sad.

Sunset at the Public Market

This is a classic view that has been repeated thousands of times by thousands of photographers. But when it's done with Kodachrome, the site is even more spectacular due to the film's tendency toward red tint.

Bottom line: Great Beyond's Sunset at the Public Market is a true winner.

Dick's Fries

This photo was taken in 2005 by Rakka, before Dick's changed the type of oil they use on the fries. The older version - long a cult favorite - were limp, salty, and full of flavor. The new fries are still full of flavor and caked with salt, but they are crisper now. Personally, I like the new ones; I liked the older ones too, but the new ones generate just as much fry happiness in me.

All this photo needs is a Deluxe burger too!
